Kate the Terrible

Slow post rate my old chums! I've been doing so much sketching and liaising and prepping (and kipping and gaming), I hadn't thought to clean anything up to show your fine selves. Anyways, here we have Kate, a cast away from a recent project. She is a sociopath, very fast and completely without logic. The speed, complete lack of motive and apparant utter insanity makes her queen on the battlefield. Her smile alone has felled enemies.

Beast Quest

Ever heard of Beast quest?

Heres an example of the art: Link So I did some samples for beast quest, trying to get the art style and the look of the main character down as accurately as possible while producing my own illustrations. Here are the results! Tom leaping over logs:

I tried to get the digital brush effects in this momentary relief from action:

I noticed he looked quite like Link. Not sure if this doodle helped my chances..

So then i had to design a skeletal shark man! The first time I've really had a go at using silhouettes:

Final shark man: I only had a few hours to finish it so its a bit wiffly.

All in all I'm fairly certain I didn't get the job, partially because i think the artwork was expected within 3 days and it took me 4. In my defense no dates were set and 4 artworks in 4 days is a personal best ;D

Experiments in faster colouring! Because sometime people want things in less then 2 weeks.

I don't believe I posted this yet! Lots of playing going on with ink. Robin and I are going to do a take on 24 hour comics - childrens book in a night. Might get ugly.

Character design and Model sheets

I've noticed a lot of people get to my blog by searching google for model sheets, and as I had trouble once finding examples of model sheets I've decided to put up my collection for your perusal. NONE of these sheets or drawings are my own, they are copyright to the origional artists and their companies. Do not use/ sell/ publish any part of these images. I am sharing them solely for the use to which I put them, personal education as to how character and model sheets should be put together.

Princess Magazine

Fairytale princess

More like a tweenage beauty queen.. wannabe. American pageants were running through my head! She looks a little too conniving to be a true princess, and she's only 12.

Pirate Royalty

A slow down in posts is a good thing as it means I've been busying! Now while I'd never post WIPs of work being done for a commercial client, I will post the sketches that are NOT being used. Without further ado:

Pokemon demon cutie.

Well.. I think he looks like a pokemon. First time i've ever invented a creature I've been happy with. Except maybe the beads. the beads are a bit strange. Anyway below is a pretty good idea of my current painting process! Large blobs of colour which get smaller. Its like a kind of impressionism that turns out looking clean. This is also why its taking me so long to finish large paintings ;D Those blobs get mighty confusing.

I did a brighter, cleaner version of Mr Pokemon (he needs a name..) So if you want him looking a little bit more child-marketing friendly that one is here ;D

Detail for detail's sake.

In all my big sketches I end up putting in so much detail.. referenced and edited and thought out.. which I know full well will be hardly visable in the final painting. I just like to know its there :P Coming up soon: A giant screenshot of all the paintings I have managed to almost but not quite finish this summer. Its on about.. 6? Some day there will be born an organised artist.. and they'd never work because they couldn't figure out what to do with all the money.

Surfers Against Sewage Car Painting!

In a nutshell: We painted a car and the surf society sold it on ebay to raise money for surfers against sewage. Then a guy jumped it on a bike! I'd link you to the auction but I can't find it, so here's some pictures!

Mathamagician

Behold! Genius Math girl as she transforms from her teen stage into fully fledged Mathemagician. This is obviously magical girl style complete nonsense, inspired by the rather wondeful game Fantasy University: F.U.. One of my favorite comic artists did the concept art for this game, and when it gets going It'll be the best game on Facey-B by a long way.

Recycling Zombie

Working in a lot of big pieces at the moment, so heres a delightful little zombie in the meantime. Always recycle your spare limbs.

Also Goldfish - We come together, is one of the coolest things you will ever watch.

Character sheets

Been hunting through the web for model sheets, its so hard to get hold of some of the old disney ones and even pixar seem to keep a tight hold on theirs! If anyone reading knows of some good animation books for character development i'd be interested :D
